Thanks to the USB Over Ethernet application, a USB device does not need to be physically connected to your computer for you to be able to access it. That’s because this KernelPro-developed application lets you remotely access USB devices. You can access a USB device shared over the local network (Ethernet) or over the internet. When you connect to a shared USB device, it’s like that device is plugged to your PC.

USB Over Ethernet works with numerous Windows editions, from Windows 2000 up to Windows 7. To get the application up and running, you will first have to download a 2.5MB archive. Inside the archive there’s a setup.exe file; run it and you will be presented with a setup wizard what will guide you through the installation process. In little time you will be done with the whole thing.

There are two tabs on the application’s interface: a Local Devices tab that shows your local USB devices and a Remote Devices tab that displays USB servers and remote devices. In the upper left hand corner, where it is usually located, there’s a traditional File Menu.

You are well advised to get USB Over Ethernet if the functionality you’re looking for goes along these lines: you want to be able to work with remote USB devices as if they were connected to your PC; you want to be able to share USB devices over the network so that others can access them. If this is what you’re looking for, USB Over Ethernet is the right tool for the job. A shared USB device can be easily accessed by someone in another office, another building, or even in another city.

Please note that USB Over Ethernet is shareware, meaning that it comes with the following limitations: 15-day trial, no more than 1 USB device can be connected.

Share USB devices with others and remotely connect to USB devices thanks to the functionality USB Over Ethernet has to offer.

Pros

Getting USB Over Ethernet up and running on your Windows PC will take little time. Using the application is a simple process: share USB device, connect shared USB device. You can share and remotely access shared USB devices. High-speed video, audio devices, and web cameras are supported.

Cons

USB Over Ethernet is free to try: 15-day trial, limited to 1 connected device.
